What is the service all about?

The Barnsley children’s speech and language therapy team provide services for people in the whole borough of Barnsley.

We work with children and young people who have speech, language and communication problems. We also support children and young people with eating and drinking difficulties.

Where is it based?

We are based at Kendray hospital but our therapists work from locations throughout the area of Barnsley.

How do I refer my child?

What happens after my referral is accepted?

Once a referral is accepted for communication, we will write to you and ask you to telephone us to make an appointment.  You need to call us within three weeks. When you call us we will offer you the next available appointment in your local clinic.

What happens after referral for eating and drinking difficulties? A speech and language therapist will contact you on the phone number given with the referral.  They will ask you for a good time to telephone to discuss your child's eating and drinking needs.  After this discussion the therapist will take to you about what will help your child and whether another appointment is needed.

Please Note:

Barnsley children’s speech and language therapy service are working differently at the moment due to the Covid-19 crisis. We are still working to help children and families who are referred to us. We are still accepting referrals. We are now offering appointments by telephone, video or face to face.  Face to face appointments will be where we need to do essential work or activities that cannot be done by telehealth.  A therapist may offer to see your child in either a clinic or at the child's school. Therapists will continue to wear personal protective equipment for any face to face appointments.
