Michelle Winters - Little Olive Tree Montessori Childminder
I am an Ofsted registered Childminder. I have 7 years experience working as a Childminder and Early Years Montessori Practitioner in a Montessori nursery. I have a level 4 Early Years Educator Diploma in Montessori Pedagogy. I previously worked for 7 years as registered general nurse.
I live in a semi-detached house with my husband, daughter, cat and dog. I provide a warm, caring and nurturing home environment. I follow the Montessori philosophy of "follow the child".
The indoor setting offers a playroom, living room, kitchen and downstairs toilet. I have a range of wooden toys and Montessori learning materials to support children's learning in accordance with the EYFS. I follow the Montessori approach, which includes practical life activities, such as baking, gardening, polishing and cleaning, threading and sewing, transferring and cutting activities. I offer music and dance sessions using a range of percussion instruments and props, such as scarves and bubbles to encourage movement. I have a large range of children's books and use props alongside story-telling such as puppets and story baskets. I use loose parts and authentic materials to encourage open-ended play and to support wonder, awe and curiosity when learning. I also promote mindfulness, such as supporting children to develop grace and courtesy and activities such as yoga and meditation. I have a range of art and craft materials that the children can access throughout the session.
I also provide plenty of outdoor learning opportunities. I encourage children to play outside on a daily basis and have a large safely enclosed garden providing learning activities such as water and sand play, small world play, physical activities and gardening. I have a wildlife garden and grow vegetables. I provide learning activities to enable children to gain knowledge and understanding of the world, such as learning the life cycle of different animals, learning about space, the planet Earth, continents and countries. The children learn about their local community and environment, for example I take the children on regular outings to places such as the park, playground, museums, playgroups and library. I am developing my knowledge of outdoor play and am currently undertaking the 'Muddy Puddles' teacher training course. I continue to develop the outdoor space to create 'an outdoor classroom' to support children's learning and development.

- How do we offer support to children or young people with a special educational need or disability?
As a Montessori Childminder I follow the philosophy of "follow the child". I treat each child as an unique individual with their own learning styles and differing needs. I provide Montessori learning materials which engage all the senses and support differing learning styles. An example includes sandpaper letters and numbers, these tactile materials can support children with visual impairments.
I observe children on a regular basis through photos, snapshot and narrative observations. I add these observations to a child's individual learning journal. These observations guide me when planning next steps for children in order to progress their learning. I use a tracker form on a 2 monthly basis to assess if the child is progressing in accordance with the EYFS guidelines. I then formally meet with parents to discuss their child's progress and next steps. I will discuss with parents any concerns I may have regarding a child's development. In partnership with the parents I will make appropriate referrals and gain further support if required. I will signpost parents to the appropriate support services.
