Why not join Barnsley Youth Choir?
The Barnsley Youth Choir was established in February 2009 to serve the children and young people of Barnsley. The choir currently has over 250 members aged between 7 and 23 years old and is divided into three smaller choirs – The Children’s Choir, The Training Choir, and The Senior Choir.
Barnsley Youth Choir is a voluntary organisation and registered charity that relies on the hard work and dedication of a large team of skilled volunteers. It is also reliant on the kindness and goodwill of patrons who support the organisation. Barnsley Youth Choir is also fortunate enough to receive donations from figures within its community, enabling the choir to develop and thrive.
The choir performs a varied repertoire of music that includes Classical, Pop, Gospel and Folk music.
Barnsley Youth Choir is based at the Horizon Community College on Dodworth Road, Barnsley, and rehearsals take place every Thursday evening during school term time.
The choir welcomes new members at several points during the year and auditions for the choir are coordinated by our admissions officer Lynne Veal. Auditions take place on the 1st or 2nd Thursday following the start of a new school term and usually last for around 20 minutes. However, we always welcome enquiries from singers aged 13 and above. The audition requires singing in both a small group and solo.
Young people auditioning for the choir are not expected to prepare any pieces in advance as the auditions are lead by one of our musical directors who will support and guide each young person through the process. Not all the young people who audition are offered a place in the choir, but those who are unsuccessful will be given a supportive explanation and some constructive advice. Many of our members have joined us having been unsuccessful on the first occasion.

Table of costs Amount Cost Type £2.00 per week
- We are a non-profit making organisation and no members of the organisation are paid for their time. Despite this, we have some significant costs to bear that we need to finance. Choir members are asked to pay £2 per week at rehearsals This is a minimal charge that supports the choir and enables us to pay for ongoing expenses. All money raised goes directly to the choir and the children, and no monies will go to choir leaders or any other members of the organisation. However, we do not want this to prohibit children from being involved, so we would welcome parents or carers who have any issue with this payment to please speak to Ann Wroe or Mat Wright and we will discuss a way of making it possible for your child to be involved.
