Christine Baker & Alice O'Brien
I have been childminding since 1995 and have now achieved a BA Honours Degree in Early Years. I work alongside my daughter Alice who has achieved a Level 3 in Early Years.
We also work with an assistant. Our childminding setting is situated in a quiet cul-de-sac position in Carlton, near Barnsley and also close to Wakefield. We live in a detached house where children have access to all downstairs areas of my home. We have a reasonably large safe enclosed garden, including climbing frames, bouncy castle, bikes, cars, see-saws, sandpits etc.
We have 2 large summerhouses for the children to play in which gives us access to outdoor play in all weathers with numerous resources for the children.

- How do we offer support to children or young people with a special educational need or disability?
All the children in our childminding setting are valued as unique individuals and both Christine and Alice will help with the settling in process. This often entails collecting information from parents and other professionals; if involved in your child’s care, learning and development.
We also help monitor your child’s progress & learning in any way we can with children with learning difficulties or disabilities. We like to use photographs & make random written notes/observation’s etc. which will always be available to share with parents. We will also share these observations with other professionals involved in your child’s care with your permission unless we have any cause for concern.
- What specialist training, experience and expertise do we have relevant to children with special educational needs and disabilities?
We have had experience with children with variable disabilities and learning difficulties.
We have experienced a child showing signs of being on the Autistic Spectrum before an actual diagnosis was made. Then cared for a child with a definite diagnosis of Autism who had to attend a specialist school for children with complex needs and disabilities.
Other children ‘looked after in foster care and on the child protection list’ one with a speech delay and behaviour issues and one with complex needs where we worked alongside other professionals and held “Child in Need” meeting’s.
One child with Downs Syndrome and one with Cerebral Palsy.
We have an excellent support network with our Local Authority Quality Improvement Officer’s and have access to a wide variety of training.
Other Professionals Involved-
Social Services, Health Visitor, Paediatric Nurse, Community Nursery Nurse, Paediatric Doctor, Speech Therapist, and Dietician. Good school partnership.
- How accessible is our setting?
We have ramp access to the front door.
We have a downstairs toilet but not big enough to allow wheelchair access.
We have ample parking on our street.
