Claire Rhodes (Little Feet Big Steps)

Hello, my name is Claire and I live in the Royston area of Barnsley. I have one child of my own, who is 4 years old.  My dad also lives with me and is DBS checked.  He is a retired music teacher who has a love for gardening. I moved to Barnsley in 2015 having previously lived in the Wakefield area.

In 2004 I qualified as a primary school teacher and have 15 years infant teaching experience as well as being a Key Stage leader for 5 years.  I have taught children from EYFS up to Year 4.  I am always striving to continue my professional development and I'm currently taking new courses to ensure I am up to date and can provide the best quality care at all times.

My aim is to provide a safe, welcoming, caring and stimulating family environment where children feel happy and relaxed to enjoy themselves and learn in a home from home setting.  Whether they are building sandcastles outside in the sandpit, making cups of tea in the home corner, visiting local parks or attending local baby and toddler groups, they are having fun – exploring, investigating and learning through play.

I offer places for children full time and  pick-up and drop-offs from Summerfield Primary Academy.

I can provide Early Education for 2 and 3 & 4 year olds through the 30 hours entitlement and the Two Year Entitlement.

My qualifications include BA (Hons) English with QTS, Paediatric First Aid, Early Years Designated Safeguard Lead, Level 2 Food Hygiene and up-to-date training associated with childcare and Ofsted requirements.

My home is local to Royston village, Notton, Woolley and Carlton as well as numerous play groups and our local Library.  Children have access to my downstairs rooms including a small toilet and washroom with their own individual coloured towels, as well as a stepper and toilet adapter should they need them.

Children can participate in many activities and experiences including: -

  • sand and water play
  • home corner and dressing-up
  • small world play – train track, farm etc.
  • creative – collage, junk modeling, painting etc.
  • malleable play – play dough, clay etc.
  • games and jigsaws
  • reading and ICT
  • pretend and imaginative play – using puppets, props etc.
  • baking

Outdoor play can be accessed on a daily basis (weather permitting) with the use of large physical equipment, outdoor games and resources.

Children also enjoy regular trips to the local parks, the library, toddler groups and places of interest associated with our term topics

I provide a high quality childcare service, which ensures children’s safety and well-being is paramount at all times.

Local Offer

Schools Extended Local Offer Response

How do we offer support to children or young people with a special educational need or disability?

Young children attending my setting have a learning journey where I will record their learning, achievements, next steps, goals and assessments as well as observations enabling any causes of concern to become highlighted or evident.  Parents/carers are encouraged to share any concerns or worries, and together we can work closely to ensure their child and themselves are receiving appropriate and relevant support from outside agencies and professionals.

I will try my best to support all children including SEN and disabilities by putting adaptations into place to provide a home from home environment as well as carefully planning activities to ensure children are experiencing the same play and learning opportunities equally and safely to enhance their learning and development.

I follow the Early Years Foundation Stage for children aged 0 - 5 years as required by Ofsted.

Parents/carers are welcome to have visits to my setting prior to our childcare arrangement commencing to help their child become comfortable, happy and aid with the settling-in process.  I promote two-way conversation - encouraging parents/carers to share information, worries or concerns verbally when dropping-off or collecting their child.  I will also send a daily diary home with comments from the day, what we have eaten and any general information, I will also encourage parents/carers to write in the diary too.  I may also communicate to parents/carers by text or a telephone conversation during the day and I will do my best to respond to any messages as soon as conveniently possible.

What specialist training, experience and expertise do we have relevant to children with special educational needs and disabilities?

Within my 15 years teaching experience I have taught children with various needs and disabilities.  I will ensure I attend appropriate or specialised training to ensure I can support and care for individual needs and requirements.  I keep my professional development and knowledge up to date by attending training courses regularly, which are appropriate to my profession and setting.  This includes SENCO training for childminders, Safeguarding (Designated Lead) and Paediatric first Aid.

How accessible is our setting?

Children will participate or access local facilities - play areas, play groups, parks (large physical play) and the local library as part of our routine on a regular basis.

Planned visits may be arranged within and around the Barnsley area to places like Cannon Hall, Wigfield farm, Newmillerdam or Locke Park for example.  During school holidays, children may experience different museums of interest, the Cooper Gallery or the Barnsley Experience at Barnsley Town Hall to participate in their planned activities to further their education and development.

Resources are easily accessible and age/stage appropriate to ensure children are exploring, investigating and using their imagination during play situations, whether on their own or in small group situations.

I have a downstairs toilet and sink that children will have access to.  There is a step at both the front door and back patio doors.  Any adaptations will be put in place or provided according to individual preferences and requirements.
