Athersley Family Centre - Childcare

At Athersley Family Centre we offer childcare for funded 2,3 and 4-year olds. The session times are listed below, and we are open during term time only.

Our aim is to improve outcomes for all children who attend and develop their self-help and interaction skills in preparation for school.

We have an outdoor play area that provides exciting experiences for children to explore and enjoy.

The nursery is equipped with resources to ensure children are stimulated in a safe environment.  We encourage children to be independent and allow them to develop at their own pace by learning through play.

All nursery staff are qualified, experienced and take pride in ensuring that continuous professional development is a high priority. Staff ensure that the nursery always operates to a high standard.

Partnership working with parents is key to ensuring that your child thrives whilst attending our nursery. We welcome you to share any information you may have to enable us to do this effectively.

Athersley Family Centre is a fully inclusive setting which is accessible to all children and their families.  If you or your child has any individual needs or requirements, please feel free to contact us to discuss this further. Any visits to the nursery will need to be booked in advance to ensure that Covid 19 restrictions are adhered to.

Schools Extended Local Offer Response

How do we offer support to children or young people with a special educational need or disability?

Prior to starting nursery parents and children will be invited to look around the nursery, meet the staff and discuss any concerns or individual needs they may have.  Parents will be assured that all requirements will be discussed appropriately, and any additional support or advice will be sought to ensure that any needs will be met.

All parents will receive an information pack that includes the following

  • Your Local Family Centre (Information leaflet)
  • Early Help - A Guide for Parents and Carers (Information leaflet)
  • What's on Guide - In Barnsley North Family Centres (Activity guide)
  • Information about the nursery i.e. session times, policies and procedures, what to expect when your child starts nursery
  • Provide 1:1 support if identified and required
  • Additional transition periods if needed
  • Extra training for staff
  • Provide an inclusive environment for all children
  • 3 SENCOs within the nursery to ensure all children are supported
  • Individual planning for all children's needs
  • Having honest and open discussions with parents on a regular basis
  • Support from other relevant health professionals and external agencies as required

Each child is allocated a key person on entry and this is backed up by a buddy system to ensure that children's needs are met at all times.  Baseline assessments are undertaken and recorded in each child's Learning Journeys. Observations and assessments are undertaken on a regular basis by nursery staff and shared with parents.

Parents are actively encouraged to be involved in their child's learning both at home and at nursery.  We provide a newsletter which gives information of what is happening at nursery on a regular basis and use the Family Centre Facebook page to give updates.  Parents are able to access their child's Learning Journey and staff are available on a daily basis to discuss any concerns parents may have.

Any support needed will be discussed on an individual basis as and when required.  The Family Centre is able to access and signpost families to a wide range of support services if required.

Tailored transitions to suit individual needs will be discussed with children, parents and staff from both settings when required.  The nursery has positive links with all the local nurseries, childminders and schools and will give as much support as possible to ensure a smooth transition.

What specialist training, experience and expertise do we have relevant to children with special educational needs and disabilities?

The child's key person will liaise with the SENCO and the Senior Early Years Practitioner to discuss what support is required.  Parents will be involved and other professionals who are working with the family to identify what level of need there is.  There are various ways of supporting children and additional funding can be applied for depending on need.  Nursery staff will support parents through this process and keep them informed of any developments.

All nursery staff are qualified and experienced Early Years Practitioners. Continuous Professional Development is a high priority and all staff are actively encouraged to access and undertake various training on a regular basis. There are also three dedicated and qualified SENCO's within the nursery to give additional support to children, families and other staff members.  Some of the training undertaken is detailed below

  • Early Help Assessments
  • Moving and Handling
  • Makaton
  • ECAT
  • Autism Awareness
  • SENCO Training
  • Safeguarding
  • Paediatric First Aid
  • Administering Medication

The Family Centre has positive relationships with a range of additional services which ensures we have a good knowledge on which services best suit families for instances. Before any child who has a disability or medical condition attends a meeting will be arranged with all concerned and if any training is required for staff this will be arranged before the child attends. Please contact the Family Centre for further information regarding this.

How accessible is our setting?

The Family Centre and nursery are fully accessible: Wheelchair access, automatic doors, adapted toilet doors, parking spaces, sensory room and equipment.

Nursery staff ensure that whatever ability level a child is working at, regardless of age, the resources will be matched to this in order to offer stimulation and stretch them.
