Motability Scheme

If you are a child or young person with a disability, the Motability Scheme would help you be more mobile by swapping your mobility allowance to lease a new car, scooter or powered wheelchair.

What is on offer?

The scheme offers:

  • Standard cars: work out how you will use your car, the types of trips that you make and whether it is suitable for the needs of the child or young person with a disability.
  • Wheelchair accessible vehicles: WAVs are very different from standard cars. Your child will stay in their wheelchair and so will feel slight movements. Their height will give them a different view through the windows and with most WAVs the wheelchair user will be sat closer to the back of the vehicle which may make communication harder. .
  • Cars with adaptations: depending on the type of adaptations chosen, they can help a young person with a disability drive independently or make the car more accessible and easier to stow a wheelchair. Remote control devices, steering aids, swivel seats and person hoists are just some of the adaptations available.
  • Scooters and powered wheelchairs: to get the most out of this option, you should consider the needs of the child or young person with a disability and how much independence this could give them.
