Gawber Pre-school

Gawber Pre-school is set in the heart of Gawber attached to St Thomas Parish Hall. We welcome all children and families to our warm and friendly pre-school. We provide children and their families with a happy, safe and nurturing environment where we inspire to develop each and every child's individual needs. We offer a broad range of educational opportunities and provide experiences that enrich each child's social, emotional, phsyical, intellectual, cognitive and creative abilities. We aim to foster each child's uniqueness and provide a diverse, vibrant programme as they work towards common goals within the Early Years Foundation Stage. We have a passion for outdoor play and offer exciting opportunities for children to learn and explore in our lovely outdoor environment. At pre-school, we set the foundations for children's first steps of their academic journey and we hope that they develop a love of learning through the play opportunities we provide. Gawber Pre-school prides itself on building strong relationships with families to ensure the best outcomes for children.

How do we offer support to children or young people with a special educational need or disability?

The setting has staff that have knowledge and attended training either externally or internally that enables them to identify children who may need extra help.  Our Special Educational Needs Coordinator (SENCO) takes the lead for staff to discuss any issues.  We work closely with parents around sharing information about their children and if they have concerns we work closely with the local authority to ensure that children get the appropriate help they need.

Children are planned for individually by their key worker in line with the Early Years Foundation Stage.  We use the observation assessment and planning cycle to plan for and identify next steps.  The setting has a holistic approach to learning and all areas provide rich learning opportunities

We share information with parents face to face, through letters, emails, learning adventure files and tapestry.

Key workers and staff will build positive relationships with children and parents to ensure all children's individual needs are met.

Support will be given to children by our staff and the SENCO will give advice about levels of support on a day to day basis, however, this is in conjunction with the local SENCO co-ordinator and we would take advice from them to ensure each child was receiving the appropriate support.

What specialist training, experience and expertise do we have relevant to children with special educational needs and disabilities?

We have support from the Local Authority to signpost us to relevant outside agencies.  We have a member of staff who is working towards Early Years Teacher Status who has extensive experience working with Early Years children and in particular children with speech and language needs.  She is also Makaton trained.

How accessible is our setting?

Activities will be planned to meet all our children's needs.  Risk assessments will be carried out and appropriate levels of staff maintained.

As all children are planned for individually any additional resources would be identified through observation or prior information about the child.  We would then seek the advice of the family and appropriate professionals to support the setting with this.
