Barnsley Education Inclusion Services - Hearing Support Team
We offer training, advice, support, guidance and challenge to educational settings in order to help them to remove the barriers to learning for children and young people who are D/deaf or who have a hearing loss
The service covers the whole of the Barnsley area. This includes: home settings, early years settings, mainstream schools, and the Local Authority special schools within the borough.
We work closely with other professionals such as health professionals, other SEND support teams, social services and voluntary organisations.

How does the setting know if children/young people need extra help and what should I do if I think my child/young person may have special educational needs?
If child has a diagnosis of a hearing loss or shows signs of any of the following: delayed or disordered speech production, appears dreamy or inattentive, he/she listens when he/she wants to is a common description. If a child presents with any of these a parent/carer should take the child to the GP and ask to be referred for an audiological assessment.
How will you support my child or young person's SEN and disability?:
An initial assessment is made of the degree to which the hearing impairment is affecting your child’s access to the curriculum and language development. In agreement with school we will make recommendations about how to support the child more fully in the classroom and also about any interventions which maybe necessary to support your child’s listening or language development.
How will the curriculum be matched to my child's / young person's needs?
the setting will take advice from a Teacher of the Deaf on how to adapt the curriculum for a D/deaf or a child with a hearing loss.
How will both you and I know how my child/young person is doing and how will you help me to support my child's/young person's learning?
Assessments will be carried out and joint working will take place with the setting with regarding attainment. Speech discrimination assessments will be undertaken annually to give information on how your child is accessing speech in different listening conditions. Recommendations will be left after every visit.
What support will there be for my child's/young person's overall well being?
In consultation with the school the Teacher of the Deaf can offer support for personal understanding of deafness as well as for their social and emotional wellbeing.
What specialist services and expertise are available at or accessed by the setting ?
Schools and settings have access to a Teacher of Deaf with a mandatory qualification to teach children and young people with a hearing loss.
What specialist training have the staff had?
All members of the team hold hold the mandatory qualification which is obligatory Teacher of the Deaf or are in training.
How will my child/young person be included in activities outside this classroom including school trips?
A Teacher of the Deaf would give advice on how to keep a child safe on an educational visit and provide advice on assistive listening devices.
How accessible is the setting?
A Teacher of the Deaf can give advice to ensure the setting is accessible to children and young people who are D/deaf or have a hearing loss.
How will you help to settle my child/young person into the setting? How will you prepare them to move from the setting to the next stage of their life?
In consultation with the seeting a Teacher of the Deaf can support the transition process, to ensure new staff are fully informed of the child’s needs.
How are the setting's resources allocated and matched to children's/young people's special educational needs?
The National Sensory Impairment Partnership Eligibility Criteria (Natsip) this is the national document which is funded by the Department for Education to ensure that children with similar needs receive similar levels of support across the country.
How is the decision made about what type and how much support my child/young person will receive?
The Natsip criteria will be used in conjunction with the setting to determine how frequently a child would benefit from working with a teacher of the deaf. The setting.
How are parents involved in the setting? How can I be involved?
Parents/carers are consulted about their child’s support plan and the Teacher of the Deaf will contribute to this.
In accordance with the SEND Code of Practice 2014, the team works across the age ranges from 0-25 years.
Our service aims to meet the individual needs of D/deaf children and young people and those with a heaing loss; in order to identify the necessary level of support we give each child and young person, we use The National Sensory Impairment Partnership(NatSIP) eligibility criteria.
It would be expected that an education setting would provide SEN support and intervention. If the child or young person continues to struggle, the setting can refer into the service. We also accept referrals from health and social care professionals.
Before we will become involved directly with a child/young person a referral is usually required from the Audiology Clinic, Paediatric Audio Vesibular Physician or the Ear, Nose and Throat Department. If parents/carers do have concerns over their child's hearing level they can ask for an audiology appointment through their GP or through the Hearing Screening Clinic.
We provide a flexible, personalised approach to communicating with children and young people, families and educational settings.
The service uses appropriate communication systems such as Makaton, British Sign Language and Signed Supported English, electronic communication (text/email) as well as face to face meetings, telephone calls and written reports/letters etc.
We are a highly skilled, expert team who have been trained in hearing loss. Our team continually updates its professional development to ensure we can respond to the needs of the children and young people using up to date strategies and interventions.

- What outcomes does your service aim to achieve for children and young people with special educational needs and disability and their families?
The aim is to help educational settings to improve outcomes for D/deaf children and young people with a hearing loss by removing barriers to learning in order that they can achieve their full potential and make a successful transition to adulthood.
- How accessible is the service and facilities for those with a disability
Involvement with children and young people and their families generally takes place in eduaction and/or health settings. Referrals are taken from education, health and social service practitioners.
