Barnsley RUFC Tots, Mini's & Junior Section

Welcome to our record, here you will find information about our Tot's, Mini and Junior Ssctions of the well known Barnsley RUFC who are based at Shaw Lane Rugby club.

Tot's rugby starts for children from 3 years upwards.

Children age 3, 4 and 5 will start with basic ball handling and running skills using fun games and as the season progresses they will learn how to play “tag rugby”. The most important thing is that they have fun and learn to play the game safely and in the right spirit.

They do not play competitive games until they reach their 6th Birthday. Once they are six they can join the under 7’s team and play competitive games. They train on Saturday mornings 10:30 – 11:30 but games are usually played on Sunday mornings from 11am.

There will be some travel involved when they have away games.

Children attending these sessions need to be able to listen and join in with a group.

We ask that they wear trainers or football boots and either shorts or tracksuits depending on weather conditions.

In cold weather please make sure they have several layers and a hat. They may also get muddy so a change of clothes may be required before traveling home in the car!

Its also a good ides to bring a non fizzy drink to keep them hydrated.

We suggest they have a 2-3 week trial to see if they enjoy the sessions before making a commitment to join.

Midi rugby starts from Under 6 to Under 12's. We follow the RFU continuum under which the game is introduced in stages, this can be viewed at

Junior Rugby starts from Under 13’s (Year 8) this team is 15-a-side and played on a full size pitch.

We train from September to the end of April at Barnsley rugby club. If you are interested please turn up at a session or contact Mark on the number below; A player’s age on the 1st September will decide which age group they are allocated to. Mixed age groups are not allowed unless special dispensations have been granted by the RFU.

The club has a thriving junior section with Under 13’s, 14’s, 15’s, 16’s and 17’s and two girls teams.

Training takes place every Wednesday evening from 6:00pm onwards. Please see individual team details for specific times.

Training will include warm up, fitness, set plays and general rugby skills and tactics.

Games are played on Sunday mornings either at the club or at other local clubs for away fixtures. Start times do vary depending upon pitch availability at some clubs; it is usually 11am kick off. Details of fixtures can be found on each team’s web pages on

All players need to be registered with both the club and the RFU for insurance purposes.

We have 3 full size rugby pitches and flood lit training is also available on all-weather Astroturf and the second team pitch.

Each junior team has access to clean and secure changing facilities with showers. The younger teams will have access to showers once able to change without assistance due to safeguarding rules.

Parental help is always required, this may involve helping set up the equipment and putting it away or collecting subs.

If you want to be more involved in the game why not help running the touch line or providing first aid. We also need coaches and referees to help run the minis and junior sections. Without this help we would not survive.

If you are interested please ask any of the coaches or contact the club directly. We encourage parents interested to take up coaching courses, if your son or daughter enjoys rugby why not got more involved than standing on the side lines.
