Independent Training College

Independent Training College aims to prepare all learners to develop their careers by enabling them to gain skills and qualifications through a unique range of programmes.  Our Careers Advisors and Teaching Team provide an excellent level of support for all young people on all our programmes.  We tailor our programmes to meet individual learner needs and we provide outstanding pastoral support for all young people on our courses.

There are no academic entry requirements for the Study Programme.  The only entry requirement is that they are aged 16-19 (up to 24 years for learners with additional needs).  We also offer Traineeships to learners aged 19-24 years.  We carry out initial assessments prior to the start of their programme to determine what level of programme would be suitable and what additional support may be required.

We offer a wide range of placement opportunities to suit all vocational areas.  Our programme is roll-on, roll-off so young people can commence their programme of study at any time during the academic year.

Description

We provide specialist 1:1 support and cater for learners with social and communicational difficulties with our smaller group sizes.  We pride ourselves on providing an outstanding learner experience for young people with a variety of learning difficulties and disabilities.  Our experienced and qualified teaching staff work dailywith learners that have been diagnosed with Aspergers Syndrome, Autism, Dyspraxia, ADHD, ADD, ODD, Dyslexia, Irlen Syndrome and Dyscalculia.  We provide bespoke support to our learners with additional needs.

Our learners are assessed during the induction process and a unique learning and support plan is created to aid them progress onto the next stage in their life.  We offer a range of supportive placement opportunities and structured classroom sessions which are designed to engage learners, develop confidence and improve employability skills.

How do we offer support to children or young people with a special educational need or disability?

We conduct initial assessments before induction which enables us to identofy difficulties such as Dyslexia, Dyscalculia or Irlen Syndrome, as early as possible.  Our highly experienced and qualified Careers Advisors and Teaching Staff are trained to identify learning needs and disabilities through classroom observations, reviews and tutorials.  Once a difficulty or additional need has been identified the learner is then referred to our in-house assessor of Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SENDs).  Here all difficulties and needs are extensively investigated and, if required, applications to the Council are make with regards to an Education, Health and Care Plan.

Our support is tailor made and unique to meet all of our learner's individual needs.  Current support includes:

  • Coloured overlays and resources, to combat difficulties associated with Irlen Syndrome
  • Additional time in assessments, Readers, Scribes and coloured assessment papers.
  • One to One support available for learners with physical disabilities.
  • Smaller groups and custom made time tables to support learners with Autism, Aspergers Syndrome, Social and Emotional difficulties
  • Experience and qualified counsellors to provide support and information, advice and guidance
  • Supported work placement opportunities for learners with additional needs
  • Qualified and experienced Careers Advisors
  • One to One Dyslexia and Study Support
  • Designated Learning Mentors for all learners.

Learning aims are designed to meet learner needs and promote realistic, achievable goals.  Every learner has a different starting point based upon initial assessments and current qualificationa.  We aim to teach all learners to be work ready, through improving Mathematics, English and Employability skills.  We secure meaningful placements which will enable learners to develop confidence and experience before embarking upon and apprenticeship or full time employment.

Learners are reviewed every 6-8 weeks by their designated learning mentor who will discus with them their current achievements, personal targets and progression.  They will highligh any additional support they feel is required and discuss with the learners any additional needs or support they may feel they would benefit from. Parents are welcome to attend reviews, contact learning mentors and arrange meetings with our staff to discuss any concerns or issues which may arise during your child's time with us.

We have an outstanding pastoral department who can offer excellent advice and guidance regarding many things, such as benefits, DLA, EHCPs and local counselling support facilities.

We offer a very supportive learning environment which eases learners into the roles of full time employees.  We offer small groups, 1:1 support, outstanding pastoral support and we have excellent Careers Advisers.  Our induction process is used to identify our learners start point, any additional needs and plan for their progression.  We have small classes which help us to encourage and develop learners with low confidence or emotional difficulties.  We embed functional skills Mathematics and English into all our sessions while promoting the learners own ambitions and aspirations.  Our learners are treated as individuals and all needs are catered for differently.  The social and vocational aspirations of the learners are always at the fore front of our planning.  We want all our learners to progress onto the next stage of their lives happy, confident and keen to continuing with lifelong learning.

Support is individualised to each of our learners and the ammount of support received will depend on the learners' individual additional learning needs and their support requirements.  Parental involvement in this matter is encouraged and if you feel the support provided is inadequate meetings can be arranged at any point during the term to discuss any concerns.

Parental involvement is always welcome and we find your advice and knowledge immensley helpful.  Our learner mentors can make arrangements with you to report back on your child as often as you require.  We have an outstanding pastoral officer who monitors attendance and provides help and advice to all learners.  He is happy to conduct home visits with parents to discuss any issues whoch may arise while your child is with us at Independent Training College.

What specialist training, experience and expertise do we have relevant to children with special educational needs and disabilities?

We have an outstanding pastoral department who can offer excellent advice and guidance regarding many things, such as benefits, DLA, EHCPs and local counselling and support facilities.

We can also offer screenings for Irlen Syndrome (SSS) and Dyslexia, and from August 2015, full diagnostic assessments.

We have fully qualified and experienced teaching staff and assessors, who have worked with learners who have ADHD, ADD, Autism, Aspergers Syndrome, Dyslexia, Dyscalculia, Irlen Syndrome, Moderate Learning Difficulties and ODD.  We have a Specialist Dyslexia Tutor, two on site Councillors, several designated Safeguarding Officers and First Aiders.  We also have qualified and experienced Careers Advisors who are aware of learners who have needs and they can effectively plan career options to suit individual needs and aspirations.

All teachers are fully qualified with PGCEs, CertEds or PTLLS.  Our Dyslexia Specialist is Irlen trained and qualified, and is currently working towards a PGcert in Dyslexia at Edge Hill University.

How accessible is our setting?

We have a selection of supportive placement opportunities available in Hospitality and Catering, Health and Social Care, Retail, Business Administration, AAT and ICT.

We also schedule 2 to 3 field trips per year for all our learners.  These activities often involve group and team building tasks.  Learners are encouraged to help us support local charities through fund raising activities.  Our learners often take part in bag packing, in local supermarkets, charity walks and running a market stall in Barnsley town centre.

We have an enterprise project which enables learners to create items or even a small business which supports them to make money while developing confidence and creativity.

Our building is accessible to all with hearing loops, automatic doors and lifts.  All our learners have access to a Tablet which can be used during sessions and break times.  Learners also have access to free WiFi while in centre.

We are close to Barnsley town centre and walking distance to the Alhambra.  We also have adequate parking spaces for learners who drive.

All additional learning needs are identified during induction and therefore in place before the learner begins formally.  If a learner is identified as requiring additional support we arrange a meeting with the learner, and parents if necessary, to discuss previous support mechanisms and explore new and innovative support options.  Further assessments and referrals may be required, or previous assessments may need to be updated.  This is organised early to esure that appropriate support is in place during teaching and enrichment sessions.  We cater for all our learners needs, but this depends on the learner, their aspirations and what support we feel would benefit them.  Providing unique and appropriate support to help our learners develop is our key priority.
