Karen Lesley Thompson (Karen's Koala's Cubs)

I have been childminding since 2002. I work with children of various ages, and my setting is a safe environment which gives everyone who attends a chance to learn and develop at their own pace.  This is supported by providing relevent experiences in line with the Early Years Foundation Stage. I am able to offer 2, 3, 4 year funded childcare places aswell as providing childcare for children with special educational needs and/or disabilities which may include those who are eligible for short breaks. The setting is open from 6:30am to 17:30pm, 5 days a week. My own development regarding training and legislation is ongoing and up to date.  I have a caring, flexible and friendly approach and offer a home from home experience for families.

Local Offer

I work closely with Families Information services catering for children who are short breaks eligible, this ensures training is undertaken when needed to benefit any child needing additional support.

I am happy to liase with external agencies and parents to provide the best possible care.

I would encourage discussions from prospective parents regarding the needs of their child and wherever possible I will accomodate them in my setting if I feel I cannot meet the needs or  the level of care required I will support them in finding alternative childcare.

Schools Extended Local Offer Response

How do we offer support to children or young people with a special educational need or disability?

I use EYFS to track and plan for children's individuals needs and this helps to identify any specific areas that may need additional attention.

All children are supported through play and learning experiences making use of trips and outings.  The EYFS is based around ensuring children's individual needs are met by working from the their current stage of development and planning for their individual needs,

I work closely with parents with daily diaries for the younger children and daily discussions at drop off and pick up for all.  I complete 2 year progress checks jointly with parents and carry out questionnaires etc.

I have a close relationship and network with the local schools and take the children that are moving on regularly to make them more comfortable with the premises etc.  But they also have a 2 week transition period at the local nursery.

Parents are involved from induction and this continues with verbal daily updates and text messages etc and a newsletter on a regular basis.

What specialist training, experience and expertise do we have relevant to children with special educational needs and disabilities?

I have worked with speech and language therapies and the local authority inclusion team as well as the health visitors and other agencies as necessary to meet the needs of the children.

I am SENCO trained and have attended Autism Awareness, Child Protection and Makaton training.

How accessible is our setting?

We visit local parks and amenities regualrly. Newmiller Dam and the library are particular favourites.

The setting is wheelchair accessible through to the back door, theres is a toilet downstairs and I have a frame for the toilet.
