Penistone Footpath Runners & AC

The Club was formed in 1982 when a group of local residents decided they were unfit and needed some form of exercise!

Since the humble beginnings, the Club has rapidly grown with over 200 members and a thriving Young Athletes Section.  Members take part in all the Local and Regional Races, Leagues and Championships.

The Club has had many South Yorkshire Champions and Representatives in the years since its formation and has built up a good reputation as a friendly Club who can promote Quality Races.

In 2002, the Club moved its Headquarters to Penistone Church Football Club and all Senior & Junior training runs now start from there.

Athletes of all abilities are welcome to come and join, whether they want to just run to keep fit or compete in races.

The club colours are a white vest with black side panel and red stripe between.  Black shorts with red strip matching vest.  Available from Kit Secretary Jane Foster.

Meet at Penistone Church Football Club on Tuesday and Thursday nights at 6.30pm. On Tuesdays all members run together on a Club Jog for 1 mile, before splitting into different groups.  Some members go on a group run, generally between 4 and 8 miles over a variety of terrain. Other members take part in Speed Training, organised by Qualified Athletics Coaches, held throughout the year and structured around the racing calendar.  These sessions include a variety of speed training over a variety of distances including hills in the winter months.  Thursday nights is generally a long, steady run.

Young Athletes

The Young Athletes meet on Tuesdays at 6.30pm all year round at Penistone Church Football Club.  Training is organised by Qualified Athletic Coaches appropriate to age and ability.
Training in the summer is based around Track and Field Athletics.

Weekend Runs
Early morning runs over the Moors are held throughout the year and details of meeting time, start location and approximate length are displayed on the website and Club Notice Board at the Football Club.

What typically happens during a session?

The main club night is Tuesday, when typically about 50-70 runners out of a total membership in excess of 150, turn up to do either serious, or not too serious, running. The seniors start with a warm up lap to Springvale in either a clockwise or anticlockwise direction, a distance of about a mile at a very steady pace. The group then generally splits into four groups: two speed groups and two separate runs – one short and steady, the other slightly longer, normally about 6 or 7 miles. The speed sessions vary – a group may do mile reps with another maybe doing a fartlek hill session or a pyramid session consisting of shorter sprints. During the summer we use the park under the viaduct for speed sessions whilst two other groups still go for a run, which during the summer it is more off road than on. On Thursdays a smaller group of senior runners meet again at 6:30 p.m. to go for a run. Depending on the numbers the group may stay as one or split into two.
