Positive Futures (Royal Mencap)

Positive Futures main focus is to assist individuals age 16-25 years with a Learning Disability, help to build up their confidence, skills and motivation through a number of activities. This will assist them to gain employment, volunteering or further education.

COURSE CONTENT 

Community Impact Project

As a learner you will work in groups to organise and deliver a CIP. Previous CIP have included gardening, helping the homeless, painting community rooms. Learners will be responsible for generating project ideas, planning, problem solving, delivery, debriefing and evaluation. CIPs have proven an effective model by:                                                                                                                                                               

  • Teaching participants new skills in turn raising self-esteem and confidence Improving involvement of participants in their communities.
  • Enhancing the community's expectations of people with a learning divisibility.

Employability

This module will focus on developing specific employment skills and experience, delivered through group and 1-2-1 session which are adapted to each individual. It will cover the following:

  • Work skills: Introduce the learner to the skills key for successful employment e.g. time management, team work and communication. 
  • My skills: Provide the learner with an understanding of the workplace and the kind of employment that may suit them e.g- placement rights and job opportunities.

Finding Work: Introduce learners to the main ways of finding paid employment. This will cover applying for work, job searching, CV writing and interview techniques.

Supported Work Placement

Each learner will complete a placement with a local employer, lasting up to 16 hours over a period Of to suit the learner. Placements will be identified with the learner to ensure suitability and will introduce the learner to the work environment, establish their ambition, interests and any further training and support needs. They also provide a reference to help the learner to move into paid employment.

Money management

This module will ensure learners are prepared and able to after their finances, The course will cover:

      • Assessing each learner's skills with money and what money means to them

  • Looking at essential and non-essential - spending, budgeting, and debt.
  • Exploring personal spending, bank accounts and protecting identity.

Fundraising Event

Learners will work to organise a fundraising event for a cause of their choice, from their local community. The groups will manage a small budget, putting their money management skills into practice.
