Barnsley Wind Bands

Barnsley Wind Bands

We are Barnsley Wind Bands. We work in partnership with Barnsley music service to provide a truly unique local service where children of all ages can learn their craft under the expert guidance of music service staff providing a unique opportunity for children of all ages and abilities to perform in structured groups suitable for their age and experience.

As a child enhances their skill and performance they will be rewarded by promotion through the various performance groups and eventually to the senior performance groups.

All the performance groups regularly perform in public on a variety of stages ranging from open air venues, to modern churches and schools.

Regular venues for performance by the senior wind band are:

  • Barnsley Civic
  • Penistone Paramount Cinema
  • Elsecar Heritage Centre
  • Huddersfield Road Methodist church where they perform in the junior Bandfest.

Finally to celebrate the festive season all four bands join together to perform at their Christmas concert.

Barnsley  & Penistone Junior Group Info

There are two Junior Bands Penistone and Barnsley Junior Wind Bands. Both groups are open to children who are just beginning their Journey into the world of musical performance. The bands play a variety of music specially written and arranged for wind bands by popular composers. These bands give public performances Three to four times a year at a variety of venues throughout the borough.

The Barnsley Junior band rehearse weekly at The Music Centre on Wednesdays 4.45pm – 5.45pm.

Penistone Junior Band rehearses weekly at Penistone St. John's Primary School on Tuesdays 3.45pm – 4.45pm.

Both bands are aimed at pupils of a beginner standard and perform a mixture of music from well-known junior band books and original compositions.

These bands often provide the first opportunity for pupils to perform in public. An experience they always enjoy and rarely forget.

Intermediate Group Info

We have an Intermediate Band who are the progress route to the senior performance group. This band play a variety of music specially written and arranged for junior wind bands; but this is of a higher standard with the aim of enhancing the students skills. The music we perform is similar to that of the Junior Bands but a little more technical. Rehearsal times are on a Tuesday evening 4.45pm - 5.45pm  at the Music Centre on Hanson Street

Most members of this band have progressed through the Junior Bands which allows them to maintain the friendships they may already have established.

The intermediate Band and Junior bands often perform at the same concerts, However, the Intermediate Band recently played at the opening of a new Advanced learning Centre where they were the support performers for the world famous Grimethorpe Colliery Brass Band; What an experience!
