Elsecar Community Nursery

We are a private day care nursery that is a registered charity and is managed by a committee of local people. The nursery is located in its own secure and private area, next door to Elsecar Holy Trinity Primary School.

We provide high quality care and education sessions, for children aged two to five, during term time, and we help to prepare your child for school. We have good relationships with schools, in our community, enabling smooth transitions when it is time for children to move onto school.

Elsecar Community Nursery provides funded places for children aged two (Two Year Entitlement) and for children aged three and four (Early Education Funding) including the new 30 hour offer. We also offer fee paying sessions.

We use the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) to plan fun and safe play activities indoors and outdoors.  We support children to explore our stimulating learning environments and encourage them to become confident learners whilst developing critical thinking and decision making skills.

It is our vision to:

  • promote healthy lifestyles
  • provide enabling environments (indoors and outdoors)
  • encourage social and emotional development
  • support children to learn and develop through play
  • prepare children for their transition to school
  • extend critical thinking and decision making skills
  • challenge children and help them to manage risk safely
  • develop independence

Local Offer

Description

Our Nursery works with the Early Years Foundation Stage and staff observe, assess and plan activities for each individual child.  We are an experienced team who can identify children that may need additional support.  We work closely with all families and discuss with them if their child needs additional help.

We have provided enhanced staffing to support children in setting as required, and feel that we are an inclusive Nursery.  We have a qualified SENDCO (Special Educational Needs and Disability coordinator) plus our staff are experienced working with children with SEND.

Staff undertake relevant training as required and we have recently sent one member on ELKLAN, Language Ladder, Building vocabulary and Phonology.  This gives us strategies that we can use in our setting with children that have speech and language difficulties.

Staff have dealt with more complex needs and liaise with other agencies such as Physiotherapy, Occupational Therapy, Speech and Language, Hearing, SCI Team (Social, communication and Interaction Team), Community Paediatrics and Health visitors.

We feedback to parents verbally at the end of each session, we also attend meetings with parents and other professionals that are involved in the care of their child.

We are able to and have experience of working with children with EAL, supporting them in the setting and working with parents and other professionals.

We operate on a key person system which means that each child is assigned to a key member of staff who will complete observations, assessments and also attend meetings with other professionals if required.  The SENDCO supports all staff when a child's possible additional need is identified.  We feel that we are equipped with a wealth of knowledge and skills to identify extra support required at an early stage.

When children move on to a new setting we liaise with the setting and share information that is necessary for their ongoing transition.  We invite new settings staff into nursery to work alongside the child to build up trust and relationship.   We also support children when visiting new settings and can accompany the child and/or parent in these visits.

We have carried out joint meetings with Portage and Health visitors in order to settle in children with additional needs, here we can determine what the child's needs are before they start nursery and ensure that we can meet these.  We have also carried out integrated 2 yr assessment reviews with health visitors for children with additional needs.

Schools Extended Local Offer Response

How do we offer support to children or young people with a special educational need or disability?

As we work closely with parents, we feel that if a child has additional needs we can identify these at an early stage.  We carry out observations, assessments and plan for a child's next steps.  By discussing their child's progress with parents, using the Local Authority Tracking paperwork and EYFS/Developmental Journal we can explain what additional requirements their child may need in setting.  Parents are always involved in any decision making process and complete a 1 page profile upon their child starting at nursery.  This gives us information that we can use to plan appropriate activities to the child's interests.

We feel that we have a good working relationship with all parents and they are comfortable in coming to us to ask for advice and support if required about their child's development.

We support parents in meetings with other professionals such as TAF meetings and ensure that they understand everything that is being said.  We work with other professionals that are involved in the care of children with SEND identifying need and sharing information.

We have helped parents completing complicated forms that are required for children with SEND - such as DLA forms, EHCP forms.
