Including links to support ranging from bereavement services to mental health first aid kits. As well as lots of local and national counselling services which meet a broad spectrum of emotional needs.  

Covid-19 has caused a huge shift in our way of living which has meant almost every aspect of our lives has had to change overnight. Many of us have had to adapt and change the way we work, live and learn. As a result, it has left many people feeling frightened, anxious and low in mood. As things change so quickly it can feel like an emotional rollercoaster that you can’t get off. This page aims to help you take back control of your emotions and feelings with various coping mechanisms and support services. Remember that it is normal to find some days harder than others but it is important to be able to recognise when it begins to impact your day to day life and get the support you need. 

Remember, your GP should be one of your first ports of call if you are struggling. They can help to get you the support you need and can refer you to specialist services.

Children & Young People's Covid-19 Emotional Wellbeing Survey

We are asking young people to complete this survey to help understand the impact of the current situation.

This will help us ensure that services are able to provide the right support at the right time to meet all young people’s needs now and in the future. 

0-19 Public Health Nursing Services

What is it? Available to those may have specific needs during this time and may require support either virtually or in person. The Public Health Nursing Team can support on a wide range of issues ranging from sexual health to worries about your weight and body. They can help you find the right support for your specific needs

Who is it for? Children young people and their families

When do they meet? The Nursing team can speak to you over the phone and depending on what you are contacting them about they may offer you some advice on how to resolve your issue, they may refer you to another service or they may offer to have a virtual video call. They can also offer a face to face visit but this is on a case by case basis and currently face to face appointments are being limited.

Looking after your own emotional wellbeing : Five ways to wellbeing

Our emotional wellbeing has always been important, but sometimes it can get pushed aside because we can’t see it in the way we see physical health, like a broken bone or a cold.

A great way to take care of our mind is to use the ‘Five Ways to Wellbeing’ which can help us keep ourselves mentally well.


Connect…With the people around you.

  • With family and friends.
  • At home, school or in your local community
  • With safe online communities   

Building these connections will support and enrich you every day.

Be Active 

You can be activeby …

  • Going for a walk or run.
  • Stepping outside.
  • Cycling.
  • Playing a game like football
  • Dancing

Being active makes you feel good. Most importantly, find a physical activity you enjoy and that suits your level of mobility and fitness.

  • Catch sight of the beautiful.
  • Remark on the unusual.
  • Notice the changing seasons.

  • Fix a bike.
  • Learn to play an instrument or how to cook your favourite food.

Set a challenge you will enjoy achieving. Learning new things will make you more confident as well as being fun.

These five pillars don’t need to be ticked off everyday but they are a really helpful tool to reflect back on if you are feeling stressed, anxious or low in mood, they can help you refocus and regain control.

Beat is the UK’s eating disorder charity for people with eating disorders and their families.

Who is it for? Beat provides helplines for adults and young people, online support and a UK-wide network of self-help groups to help people beat their eating disorder.

Although technology is incredibly important to help us stay connected with our friends and family it can get a little exhausting and it’s good to just take some time to step away from the screen and look around!

Staying at home

Getting out and about isn’t for everyone and if walking or running isn’t your thing, or you aren’t ready to leave home just yet, what about some simple relaxation exercises? These could be anything that help you keep calm and relaxed.

  • Drawing or colouring
  • Crafts such as sewing, using play clay or playdough to make things
  • Cooking
  • Listening to music or making your own music
  • Writing a letter or a journal
  • Singing along to the radio, or YouTube
  • Meditating
  • Making up a dance

These are ust a few suggestions, do what makes you happy and allows you to feel relaxed and in control of your feelings.

Counselling Services : Face to Face, Online or on the Phone

CAMHS (Child & Adolescent Mental Health Service)

What is it?

CAMHS is the Mental Health Service For children and young people in the Barnsley area.

They provide services to children and young people who are experiencing a wide range of problems, these could be;

  • behavioural,
  • psychological
  • emotional problems
  • difficult relationships
  • trauma or abuse.

In order to use the CAMHS service you need to be referred by a professional; which is somebody like;

  • A teacher from school
  • GP
  • A&E
  • Health visitors
  • Hospital staff,
  • Local authority staff, like a Family Support Worker if you have one.


Kooth Online Support 11- 25 years

What is it? 

Kooth is an online support service.

The Kooth team are here to provide free, safe and anonymous online support and counselling.

The whole team are made up of friendly and experienced individuals who want to help you.

Support is available everyday until 10pm

IAPT - (Improving Access to Psychological Therapies)

What is it?  IAPT can teach you skills and techniques to help you manage everyday ups and downs. There are a wide range of options including one to one, face to face, telephone, internet-based therapy and courses.

Who is it for? Open to anyone over 16 registered with a GP in Barnsley. You can ask your GP to refer you or do it yourself using the online referral form.

Where is it? It depends on your referral – the IAPT team will decide what will support you best – it may be group therapy or 1-1. Currently groups and workshops are not running however, telephone and online assessments and support is still available and as guidance changes modes of delivery may change.

The Mix

What is it? The Mix is the here to take on the embarrassing problems, weird questions, and please-don’t-make-me-say-it-out-loud thoughts that we have.

They offer a free & confidential helpline available 365 days a year via phone, email or webchat. They also have discussion boards and live chat.

Who is it for? Anyone under the age of 25

Community & Peer Support Groups

TADS - Therapies for Anxiety Depression & Stress 11-18

TADS works with young people in Barnsley aged 11 to 25 years, helping them with their emotional wellbeing.

TADS specifically support young people struggling with:

  • anxiety
  • worry
  • lonelieness,
  • sadness
  • bullying
  • gender and sexuality.

TADS offers workshops to increase knowledge of mental health and coping techniques.

We can also offer 1:1 coaching sessions to people who struggle in group sessions.

Anyone can be affected by mental health issues, and we will try and support everyone who comes through our doors.

You do not need to be involved with CAMHS to use this service; although if you are on the CAMHS waiting list you are welcome to join us too.

Creative Recovery 

What is it? Creative Recovery is a people-led charity that uses creativity to support recovery, boost wellbeing and bring about social change in Barnsley and across Yorkshire. This service supports individuals and families with experience of mental health and/or drug and alcohol issues. They also work to develop communities, challenging stigma and nurturing community spirit, with the aim to create a more accepting, inclusive and creative culture for all. Although there are no face to face groups taking part creative recovery is still running and they are working on new ways to engage people via post and online to help support people’s emotional wellbeing Website:

Support for those bereaved during the coronavirus pandemic – a service for anyone who has lost a loved one and who needs support, advice or guidance

NHS Covid-19 Bereavement line 

A new Bereavement Helpline has been introduced by the NHS to support bereaved families during the Coronavirus outbreak.

The new helpline is not a counselling service but will be available to offer support, guidance and advice on dealing with grief and loss.

The Good Grief Trust 

Run by the bereaved for the bereaved. The Good Grief Trust aim to help you find the support you need as quickly as possible.

You will find stories from others who have had a similar loss, practical and emotional support and signposting to a choice of immediate tailored local and national support.

If you or someone you know is having problems with drugs or alcohol you can contact any of these service and get the help you or they need. 

Young People’s Substance Misuse Service

What is it?

An allocated worker will encourage you to be honest with yourself and give you a confidential space to go over your issues with drugs and or alcohol. The service can also put you in touch with other services who are able to help you. You can work together with them, as well as your family (with your consent) to help you to achieve your goals.
